HOW DO I GET RID OF SPLIT ENDS WITHOUT LOSING LENGTH?

Nothing ruins the looks of your long locks like split ends. Longer hair has a tendency to see more split ends than shorter strands because, well, they’ve been around longer. Which means they’ve encountered more washing, drying, brushing, heat styling, UV rays, etc. You name it, your long strands have seen it. Before you attempt one of those online quick fixes for split ends (like that scary candle trick known as the “Brazilian method”!), check out our totally harmless ways to get rid of split ends and not sacrifice any of your hard-earned length.

Split Ends? Don't Panic, Here's What You Need to Know

Split ends (and their ugly cousin "breakage" ends) can be down right nasty. It’s not hard to identify a split end when you see one. But what causes these ‘do destroyers in the first place? When strands become dry, the ends are more brittle and easily frayed, resulting in the appearance of split ends. Find out how to get rid of split ends without cutting your hair and ways to keep that breakage from coming back.

1. Enlist the Help of a Split Ends Treatment

Assuming you’re here because you already have some split ends, let’s talk split ends treatment. The best and fastest way to get rid of split ends is to restore hydration to your parched strands and visibly repair any damaged hair. A product like Oway Nurturing Drops Hair Serum contains organic black quinoa and natural oils to seal split ends for visible improvement in an instant while protecting against further damage.

Another product to stock in your prevent split ends arsenal is Briogeo Damage Defense Leave In Conditioner.

This easy-to-use lightweight leave-in conditioner treatment visibly seals up to 100% of split ends after two uses. Infused with biomimetic lipids, this leave-in treatment strengthens and repairs dry, damaged hair.

Naturally Drenched Watermelon Dreams Oil, which contains 100% Organic Kalahari melon seed oil that seals, coats, and smooths the hair cuticle for smoother looking locks. Both products contain oils especially good for split ends.

2. Be Super Careful With Heat Styling

You’ve heard it before but we’ll say it again — heat styling can damage your hair and that includes split ends. While a hair dryer is less damaging to hair than using a hair straightener, it can still cause hair damage and split ends. Be sure to blow dry as infrequently as you can get away with. Tip: If you do it right, it will last longer.

3. Always Use a Heat Protectant Product

A heat protectant will save your strands from the damaging effects of heated styling. Oway Thermo Detangling Cloud is one of our favorites as it also acts as a detangler. This heat protection guards against heat plus it contains natural UV protection. All while keeping your look frizz-free and shiny. Fine to medium hair beauties should go toward Innersense Hair Love Prep Spray

4. Add a Leave In Conditioner to Your Hair Care Regimen

Because dryness is the root cause of frayed hair, keeping hair moisturized is a key way to prevent split ends. And leave in conditioners are an effective way to infuse strands with moisture throughout the day. Two oils that are beneficial for dry hair and split ends are argan oil and coconut oil. Argan oil is rich in oleic acid and linoleic acid which lend a feeling of hydration and softness to even the most parched locks.

Oway No Rinse Moist Leave In Conditioner

Made with macadamia seed oil and is ideal for nourishing and moisturizing hair. Murumuru Seed Butter helps the hair retain moisture while softening the hair.

5. Learn to Prevent Split Ends Before They Start

Now that you have a plan for getting your existing split ends under control, it’s time to identify ways to prevent split ends from cropping up in the future. Be sure to comb the hair carefully when it’s wet and more susceptible to breakage (one of those leave in conditioners will help) and always use the right hair brush for your hair type.

If you feel your hair is breaking or are seeing split ends where you usually place a hair tie, try substituting your regular tie for a silk scrunchie that’s gentler on hair, or skip the hair tie altogether and opt for a hair clip.

A satin pillowcase will help to keep your hair smooth and breakage free while you sleep. And as for the damage hair color can do, enlisting the help of our tips above will keep your hair in top condition.
