Top Ten Summer Hair Trends to Watch

The top ten hair trends this summer are primarily a mixture of two different themes: The 70's and brightening, brightening, brightening! Shags, bangs, highlights, and layers gone wild...

Summer trends are showing the obvious excitement to be creative, break barriers, and of course finally get to the salon for the blonding, highlighting services so many craved but couldn't access for the last 12-15 months. These summer styles have swept social media, including the "Wolf Haircut" so popular on Tik Tok, celebrities, and local salons.

And don't think these looks are just for the youngins either, as these looks scream on-trend and sexy at any age.

1. chunky highlights

The chunky highlights of the 90's have returned, but this time with some subtlety and elegance. The money piece and shadow root make the updated style a definite do this summer. With chunkiness means it is easier for hair to look false, so keep your color longevity by adding a reparative treatment, like Evolvh Ultra Repair Reconstructing Masque, and heat protecting spray into your weekly routine. Our fan favorite is Briogeo Don't Despair Repair Damage Defense Leave-in Spray.

Don't forget a color pigment shampoo like a purple shampoo or blue shampoo. Not sure which is for you?

Pro Tip

Purple vs Blue Shampoo: Use purple shampoo for blonde and silver hair or choose a good blue shampoo or blue conditioner for bronde or brunettes. You don't want to go wtih a blue shampoo for blonde hair. As blue cancels out orange, it is too strong with too much blue pigment for what you will need. Contrastly, purple cancels out yellow so it won't have much of an effect on brown hair. The cleanest and highest-performing color pigment shampoos on the market are Kavella. Our recommendations include:

2. The Modern Shag

The sexy, wavy take on the shag is everywhere across social media as the go-to look for those wanting to make a statement. It is a great way to add some edge to naturally wavy hair.

Want to achieve this look?

North Authentic Founder and Master Stylist, Natalie Palomino recommends drying and styling your fringe and then air drying your mid-shaft and ends to get that tussled look. Here are her go-to steps.

Step 1: Apply a leave-in conditioner or hair serum for your hair type. Follow up with a texturizing and volumizing product like Innersense Innerpeace Whipped Creme Texturizer. Apply to mid-shaft and ends while scrunching up the ends to awaken your natural waves. Apply a small amount to your fringe.

Step 2: Use a small paddle brush, like our Denman D84 Mini Paddle Brush ("My favorite fringe styling brush"). Begin wrap drying your fringe one direction using your paddle brush and forehead as a flat surface. Change directions. This will get rid of any cowlicks.

Step 3: Use a 1 3/4 inch round brush, like our Olivia Garden Brush, to slightly bevel under the ends of your fringe. Careful not to over elevate or your risk having the dreaded 80's little girl bangs.

Step 4: Let hair air dry completely then hit your ends with a dry texture spray. My favorites include:

3. curtain bangs

Peter Thompson, owner of Chelsea Haircutters, is the bee's knees when it comes to the infamous cheek bang and curtain bang look. Inspired by the forever, sexy Brigitte Bardot, this fringe is timeless but especially hot this summer.

How to style curtain bangs:

Step 1: You generally do not need to apply product to your fringe. As the hair is so short there your natural oils will make their way down to do their work. Section off the top mowhauk section of your hair. Leave out the front inch to inch and a half of hair. Clip everything else away.

Step 2: Elevate the section straight up to create volume. Place your 1 3/4 inch round brush, like our Olivia Garden Brush, behind the section. Using a concentrator nozzle on your blow dryer, blow dry the section from roots to ends while elevating up and backward. Ensure to bevel the ends backward.

Step 3: Continue backward to the next section until you complete the entire mohawk section. Use your fingers to gently guide your fringe into place. Spray with hairspray, like Davines Strong Hairspray, to set them for the day.

4. the mullet

#MileyMadeMeDoIt is right. Although Miley first debuted her mullet back in 2019, her recent trim by none only then her mom, Tish, over quarantine caused a stir reigniting the cut. If you are looking for a major statement and some edge, this is definitely the hot cut this summer.

This amazing cut was created by Travis, at Treehouse Studio of Hollywood Hills. When you visit Treehouse Studio's instagram account (@treehousehair), you will see that this adorable salon has become the go-to for edgy haircuts, including this season's go-to shags and mullets.

Want to recreate this look? Travis breaks down his how-to styling here:

"I started by working Cult & King Style into wet hair and blow drying the hair forward and side to side to knock out any partings or cowlicks and working the hair forward from the back of the crown. Next, to get a little extra lift and volume I used Davines Dry Texture Spray all over."

Travis loves using a styling dust, but we also love the use of dry shampoo powder like Oway Plant and Mineral Refresh, in the root to create extra grit and hold. To define the bang and tips of the length Travis goes for a light styling paste, like Reverie Rake Balm, for some extra separation.

5. Defined Curl Afro

The #curlygirl and #naturalhair movements are here to stay. Yahoo!!! This underserved market is finally getting all the attention it deserves and WOW are the defined curls all over Instagram showing it. Long curly hair or short curly hair, curls are this years go to. Best way to tame frizzy hair is to make sure to use hydrating hair products for styling. @Rhijo.xo is a Oway hair products superfan, so here's is her go-to hair care regimen to achieve these amazing curls.

Oway Purifying Hair Bath for Dry Scalps

Oway Frequent Use Conditioner

Oway Volumizing Root Spray⁣⁣

Oway Flux Potion ⁣⁣

Oway Glimmering Bond⁣⁣

We also recommend adding a super hydrating conditioner and weekly mask as curly hair can be dryer than other hair types as the natural oils must endure more work to get to every strand.

Our recommendations include Briogeo Curl Charisma Hydrating Hair Mask or Davines Oi Hair Butter.

Rhiannon's curly hair styling tip:

"As you guys know I’ve been loving damp styling and it saves so much time and product. There are different levels of damp styling but your hair should never be dripping wet. If it drips it’s too wet. I then just raked my hair from side to side applying product and then released the tension by pushing up on my hair (not scrunching) ."⁣

6. Beachy Hair

Master Stylist and North Authentic Pro Ambassador, Michelle Zeller (aka Mane Ivy), never disappoints with her blonde balayage expertise. For color longevity, Michelle ensures that her client's hair is strong and healthy before and after this type of service by prescribing that her client uses a moisturizing and reparative hair care duo like Davines Nourishing Shampoo and Davines Nourishing Vegetarian Miracle Conditioner. Her go-to for improving hair condition.

When it comes to creating this sexy, beachy style, Michelle recommends to start with S4E Hair Cream, directing to "...work the cream through the hair to maintain the natural shine and definition"

Next, use a curling iron, size of your choice to wrap curl your hair. We recommend the Babyliss 1 inch or 1 1/4 inch curling iron to achieve the tight wavees that Michelle does in the image above. Use sectioning, starting at the nape and working your way to the top.

Finally, Michelle says "...finish off with Oway Sea Salt Spray to add that lived in beachy texture."

7. mod bangs

Master Stylist and North Authentic Founder, Natalie Palomino, loves the fringe or mod bangs as they are popularly referred to this summer. Natalie cautions, "Bangs are awesome and sexy, but they do add an extra step to your styling routine. If you are okay with that, then go for it." Her favorite tool for styling a fringe? The Denman Mini Paddle Brush...

According to Natalie, "You want to wrap dry your bangs across your forehead one direction then switch hands and do the opposite direction while aiming your hair dryer at the root area. This will eliminate any annoying cowlicks." See steps above under the Mod Shag.

8. Strawberry blonde

Strawberry Blonde has taken off this summer and we are oh so happy about it. This beautiful color however comes with a little more maintenance. According to North Authentic Founder, Natalie Palomino, "Red is one of the hardest colors to get out naturally and or keep in artificially." What does that mean exactly? If you are not a natural red head, then you are going to need to take some crucial steps in your hair care routine to keep that red hair looking vibrant.

Here are Natalie's recommendations for lasting red hair:

1. Wash your hair with tepid water. Heat opens the cuticle, causing hair color to escape so keep heat off your hair ASAP.

2. Use a reparative, pH-balancing treatment, like Naturally Drenched Rebalance Pre-Conditioner Treatment, every week as the stronger your hair is, the more it can hold on to color.

3. Use heat protectant. Again, if you need to use heat for styling with hot tools, then ensure you use a heat protection spray or serum like Innersense Hair Love Prep Spray. Spray each section prior to curling or flat ironing.

4. Use a weekly color pigment shampoo and conditioner like Davines Alchemic Copper Shampoo and Conditioner to maintain vibrance between hair color appointments.

9. Blonde, Blonde and more Blonde

@HairbyBec is one to follow. Not only for her blonding, but for her great styling inspos that will keep you looking on-trend all season long.

Recreate This Look:

1. Blow out hair using a volumizing product, like Kavella Volumizing Mousse.

2. Use a 1 1/4 inch curling iron to wrap curl creating braid-like wave.

3. Brush out your waves with a Tangle Teezer or wide-tooth comb. Spray mid-shaft and ends with Desert Dry Volumizing Spray to create body and definition to really show off those layers.

4. Pull your hair on one side over. Using a flat hand, hold your hair flat to your head in place then use multiple hair pins to slide into place. We love our gold and silver pin set!

10. long & uber-layered hair

Last, but certainly not least, long hair, either natural or with hair extensions, with uber-layers is our last trend to watch this summer. As we have seen clients entering salons with massive hair growth, but also in desperate need of a haircut, this cut delivers the body and movement that we were missing all year.

Recreate This Look:

1. Blow out hair using a forming product like Cult & King Style.

2. Use a 1 1/2 inch curling iron to create loose, big textured waves.

3. Apply a small amount of Reverie Rake Styling Balm on your finger tips, then softly pull the waves apart while creating definition to really show off those layers.

Not sure which look is your favorite? This cross between #10 Uber-layers, #2 Modern Shag and #3 Beachy Hair by North Authentic Founder, Natalie Palomino, is the perfect inspo pic to be on trend this summer.
